Deschutes Salmonfly Hatch & Fishing Report

Just finished up a week of day float trips in the Warm Springs area of the Lower Deschutes River.  The salmonfly and golden stonefly hatches are still strong.  Fishing pressure has been heavy over the weekend, so finding clean water has been a difficult and essential task.

The river's clarity and flow have improved.  My usualy fishing spots are coming back into shape.  Best dry fly fishing has been after 12 pm.

Tips for finding rising trout when the river is crowded...

  • Find hard to access spots with nowhere to park the boat.  Trees and shade are a good bet.
  • Float past that spot, park somewhere, and hike back up river.
  • Take your time sneaking up on the suspected trout.  It's all about the approach.
